Happy and holy 2nd Sunday in Advent. This week we focus on two things; the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception and the life of Joseph, Husband of Mary.
Mary, as she is conceived in the womb of St. Anne, is given by God a prevenient grace to prepare her for receiving the gift of Jesus in her womb. The Catechism of the Catholic Church defines this grace as, “Grace is a participation in the life of God. It introduces us into the intimacy of Trinitarian life: by Baptism the Christian participates in the grace of Christ, the Head of his Body. As an ‘adopted son’ He can henceforth call God ‘Father,’ in union wit the only Son. He received the life of the Spirit who breathes charity into Him and who forms the Church.” (CCC#1997) The Mass times for the Holy Day of Obligation are in the bulletin and the parish website.
St. Joseph: As we discussed Mary’s role as mother last week, today we look at the role of Joseph in the Holy Family and especially during the time of Advent. Joseph, the silent saint, reminds us of the power of the Word of God in our lives. Yes, Joseph did speak, but importantly for us, who follow Jesus, Joseph’s silence in the Gospels points us more clearly towards the Son, Jesus Christ. Joseph allows the Word of God to speak for him in the prophetic voice of the Old Testament and the silent response to the invitation of God to be the earthly father of Jesus and the husband of Mary, Mother of God. This silent humility could not have been easy for him, but with a heart open to love, Joseph chose to listen and act in joyful service of God’s plan even during the times of trial and suffering the Holy Family experienced. Joseph’s example challenges us, with a humble heart, to accept and follow God’s plan in our own life.

Feliz y santo II domingo de Adviento. Esta semana nos enfocamos en dos puntos: La Solemnidad de la Inmaculada Concepción y la vida de San José, Esposo de María.
Cuando María fue concebida en el seno de Santa Ana, recibió de Dios una gracia especial, que la preservo del pecado, para prepararla a recibir el regalo de Jesús en su seno. El Catecismo de la Iglesia Católica define la gracia como: “La gracia es una participacion en la vida de Dios. Nos introduce en la intimidad de la vida trinitaria: por el Bautismo el cristiano participa de la gracia de Cristo, Cabeza de su Cuerpo. Como “hijo adoptivo” puede ahora llamar “Padre” a Dios, en unión con el Hijo único. Recibe la vida del Espíritu que le infunde la caridad y que forma la Iglesia” (CCC#1997). San José: Como ya discutimos la semana pasada el papel de Maria como madre. Hoy vemos el rol de San José en la Sagrada Familia, especialmente durante el tiempo de Adviento. El santo del silencio nos recuerda el poder de la Palabra de Dios en nuestras vidas. Sí, José habló, pero lo más importante para quienes seguimos a Jesús, es que el silencio de José en los Evangelios nos conduce claramente hacia su Hijo, Jesucristo. José santifica la Palabra de Dios, dejándola que hable por él, en la voz profética del Antiguo Testamento y en su respuesta silenciosa a la invitación de Dios, de ser el padre terrenal de Jesús y el esposo de María, Madre de Dios. Esta humildad silenciosa no podría haber sido fácil para él, pero con el corazón abierto al amor, José eligió escuchar y actuar en servicio gozoso del plan de Dios incluso durante los tiempos de prueba y sufrimiento que experimentó la Sagrada Familia. El ejemplo de José nos desafía, con un corazón humilde, a aceptar y seguir el plan de Dios en nuestra propia vida.
