Peace and blessings to you all as we celebrate the 7th Sunday in Ordinary Time.  We are quickly coming to an end of this short interlude of Ordinary Time that occurs between the end of Christmas and the beginning of the great season of Lent.  What a joy and blessing.

There are just 10 short days until the celebration of Ash Wednesday on March 5th. Why am I writing about this today?  We may want to think about the journey of Lent in this manner:  What if your employer told you today that in the coming year you would be offered 40 days of vacation time and you would receive your whole salary and benefits during this time?  When would you start preparing for this time?  What would you do? Where would you go? Is there someone you would want to visit?  

These are important questions to ask and think about for any length of time off, but especially for a gift of extended time.  If we prepare for a time-off/vacation with care, we should always prepare for the gift of time God shares with us.  As we prepare for our Lenten journey, we are reminded of the three great pillars of our journey of faith:  Fasting, Prayer and Almsgiving.  Each of these spiritual works are vital for your preparation.  As we have been called to a “spiritual renewal” in the Pastoral Plan of the Diocese, this coming time of Lent can be a kick-start to our journey of faith. We will look more closely at these three pillars throughout Lent.

Second, thank you to everyone who has chosen to pledge and donated to The Annual Diocesan Appeal.  Your generosity is inspiring and my fervent prayer, as your pastor, is that each member and family in the parish makes a pledge to the Campaign.  Just as when we stand and begin to pray “Our Father who art in Heaven…” we are also called to stand and as one we celebrate and support our Diocese of San Jose to continue the mission of the Church.  Please join me and your fellow parishioner at St. Lawrence the Martyr in making a pledge (large or small)  today.  Envelopes are available or you can pledge electronically using the QR code. Paz y bendiciones para todos ustedes en este séptimo domingo del Tiempo Ordinario. Estamos llegando rápidamente al final de este breve intervalo del Tiempo Ordinario que ocurre entre el final de la Navidad y el comienzo de la gran temporada de Cuaresma. ¡Qué alegría y bendición!

Quedan solo 10 días para la celebración del Miércoles de Ceniza que será el 5 de marzo. ¿Por qué escribo sobre esto hoy? Tal vez querramos pensar en el recorrido de la Cuaresma de esta manera: ¿Qué pasaría si su empleador le dijera hoy, que en el próximo año se le ofrecerán 40 días de vacaciones y que recibirá todo su salario y beneficios durante este tiempo? ¿Cuándo comenzaría a prepararse para este tiempo? ¿Qué haría? ¿A dónde iría? ¿Hay alguien a quien le gustaría visitar?

Estas son preguntas importantes que debemos hacer y pensar sobre cualquier período de tiempo libre, pero especialmente para un regalo de tiempo extendido. Si nos preparamos para un tiempo libre/vacaciones con cuidado, siempre debemos prepararnos para el regalo del tiempo que Dios comparte con nosotros. Mientras nos preparamos para nuestro camino de Cuaresma, recordamos los tres grandes pilares de nuestro camino de fe: el ayuno, la oración y la limosna.  Cada una de estas obras espirituales es vital para su preparación. Como hemos sido llamados a una “renovación espiritual” en el Plan Pastoral de la Diócesis, este próximo tiempo de Cuaresma puede ser un puntapié inicial para nuestro camino de fe. Analizaremos más de cerca estos tres pilares durante la Cuaresma.

En segundo lugar, gracias a todos los que han elegido comprometerse y donar a la Campaña Diocesana Anual. Su generosidad es inspiradora y mi ferviente súplica, como su pastor, es que cada miembro y familia de la parroquia haga una promesa a la Campaña. Así como cuando nos ponemos de pie y comenzamos a rezar: “Padre nuestro que estás en los cielos…” También estamos llamados a ponernos de pie y como si fuéramos uno solo celebremos y apoyemos a nuestra Diócesis de San José para continuar la misión de la Iglesia.  Únase a mí y a su compañero feligrés en San Lorenzo Mártir para hacer una promesa (grande o pequeña) hoy.
