Many blessings on this 2nd Sunday in Lent.  I pray that your journey has begun with great fruitfulness.  We remember that our Lenten disciplines are a gift to be shared as we grow in faith, hope and love.

One of the blessings we hope to gain is growing closer to Jesus, which means we become closer to the saints.  Early on in Lent we heard from the Prophet Isaiah about how we are called to fast. (Is 58:1-9) The prophet reminds us how the disciplines of Lent do not stand as three pillars; prayer, fasting and almsgiving as individual things, but how they must be united in support of one another, strengthening our ability to serve God in our brothers and sisters.  

For example, when we fast we will feel hunger.  If we just let the hunger be felt bodily, then it will ultimately be just hunger. But if we fill the hunger with prayer, or the gift of alms, then the hunger we feel will be filled with movement of the Holy Spirit and the gift of fasting becomes active and alive in love.  If we look at prayer and almsgiving in the same manner, prayer must point towards the movement of generosity (almsgiving) or spiritual growth fasting, if not then it is just words.  Or if the works of sharing alms through our time, talent and treasure isn’t directed towards greater unity with the Body of Christ, then it can never help us to encounter Jesus or make room for Him in our lives.  We can see how when we unite the three disciplines of Lent, they will fully support our journey of spiritual renewal.

“According to the Church's command, "after having attained the age of discretion, each of the faithful is bound by an obligation faithfully to confess serious sins at least once a year.” (CCC #1457)

The Sacrament of Reconciliation is an important and joyful gift from God through the Church.  It is an invitation to liberation and freedom and a powerful instrument to live in unity with one another.  It is healing in a grace of abundant love and mercy.

Please note the time of the Sacrament of Reconciliation at St. Lawrence the Martyr.  We will also publish the times of our neighboring parishes Reconciliation services to give everyone the opportunity of fulfilling their obligation.

Muchas bendiciones en este II domingo de Cuaresma.  Rezo para que su camino haya comenzado con grandes frutos. Recordemos que nuestras disciplinas cuaresmales son un regalo para compartir en la medida que vamos creciendo en la fe, la esperanza y el amor.

Una de las bendiciones que esperamos obtener, es estar más estrechamente unidos a Jesus, lo que significa que estamos más cerca de los santos.  Al principio de la Cuaresma hemos escuchado al profeta Isaías, que nos exhorta e indica de qué manera es que estamos llamados a ayunar. (Is 58:1-9) El profeta nos ilustra cómo las disciplinas en la Cuaresma: la oración, el ayuno y la limosna, no se sostienen en tres pilares individuales, sino que deben practicarse unidas, apoyándose una con las otras, fortaleciendo nuestra capacidad de servir a Dios en nuestros hermanos y hermanas.

Por ejemplo, cuando ayunamos sentimos hambre; si simplemente dejamos que el hambre se sienta corporalmente, entonces en última instancia será solo hambre. Pero si llenamos el hambre con la oración, o el don de la limosna, entonces el hambre que sentimos se llena con el movimiento del Espíritu Santo y el don del ayuno se activa y vivifica en el amor. Si consideramos la oración y la limosna de la misma manera, la oración debe apuntar hacia el movimiento de generosidad (limosna) o ayuno de crecimiento espiritual; si no es así, entonces tan solo son simples palabras. O si las obras de dar limosna a través de la entrega de nuestro tiempo, talento y tesoro no están dirigidas hacia una mayor unidad con el Cuerpo de Cristo, entonces nunca podrán ayudarnos a encontrarnos con Jesús o hacer lugar para Él en nuestras vidas.  Podemos ver cómo cuando unimos las tres disciplinas de la Cuaresma, ellas apoyarán plenamente nuestro camino de renovación espiritual.

“Según el mandamiento de la Iglesia: todo fiel llegado a la edad del uso de razón debe confesar, al menos una vez al año, los pecados graves de que tiene conciencia”.  (CIC #1457)

El sacramento de la Reconciliación es un don importante y agradable de Dios a través de la Iglesia. Es una invitación a la libertad y a la liberación y un instrumento poderoso para vivir en unidad unos con otros. Es sanación en una gracia de abundante amor y misericordia.
