“The Lord has done great things for us; we are filled with joy.”  This refrain we hear from Psalm 126 in Mass today points us toward the greater gift of life and mercy which we continue to celebrate and anticipate as we move ever closer to Easter on this 5th Sunday of our Lenten journey.  

Jesus in the Gospel reading today asks us to go to the deep dark corners of our lives, the examine our souls and ask the simple question, “Am I without sin?”  

As our Holy Father Francis reminded us when he was first elected; we are all sinners in need of God’s mercy.  “The Lord has done great things for us; we are filled with joy.”  The words of this Sunday’s refrain  begin to make sense when placed in the Gospel message.  Because we can then ask the next two questions; “What is the great thing God has done for us(me)?” and “Are we (am I) filled with joy?”  Our Lenten journey continues to be about asking these two questions and walking with Jesus answer them as we move toward the redeeming action in the Paschal Mystery we will celebrate.

During these last few weeks of Lent, I would encourage you to continue the spiritual works of prayer, fasting and almsgiving you began at the beginning of Lent and to take time with the Little Black Book each day in spiritual renewal.

Three other items.  First:  next week is Palm Sunday of the Lord’s Passion.  We will begin each Mass outside as we make a procession into the Church singing glory and praise to our God.  The Holy Week that follows is a time of reflection on the last days of Lent but also the light breaking into the darkness of the world. Be aware that the length of each Mass will be longer than normal.

Second:  Easter is just a few weeks away.  It is time to begin, if you haven’t begun already, to invite family and friends, fallen away Catholics and neighbors to come and celebrate with us the great joy of Easter.

Lastly, thank you to all who have  contributed to the Annual Diocesan Appeal. As we heard last week, you donation will not only help our Diocese to do the crucial work and support for our parish but also will help us renew the Parish Hall to make it a more welcoming space to proclaim the joy of Jesus.

“El Señor ha hecho grandes cosas por nosotros, y estamos alegres”. Este estribillo del Salmo 126 que escuchamos hoy en la Misa nos señala el regalo más grande de la vida y la misericordia, que seguimos celebrando y anticipando a medida que nos acercamos a la Pascua en este quinto domingo de nuestro camino cuaresmal.

En el Evangelio de hoy, Jesús nos invita a explorar los rincones más recónditos de nuestra vida, a examinar nuestra alma y a preguntarnos: “¿Estoy libre de pecado?”.

Como nos recordó nuestro Santo Padre Francisco al ser elegido: “Todos somos pecadores necesitados de la misericordia de Dios”.  Las palabras del estribillo de este domingo: “El Señor ha hecho grandes cosas por nosotros y estamos alegres” cobran sentido al insertarlas en el mensaje evangélico. Porque entonces podemos hacernos las siguientes dos preguntas: “¿Qué es lo más grande que Dios ha hecho por nosotros (por mí)?” y “¿Estamos (estoy) llenos de alegría?”. Nuestro camino cuaresmal continúa concentrándose en hacernos estas dos preguntas y caminar con Jesús para responderlas mientras seguimos caminando hacia la acción redentora en el Misterio Pascual que celebraremos.

Durante estas últimas semanas de Cuaresma, los animo a continuar las obras espirituales de oración, ayuno y limosna que comenzaron al principio de la Cuaresma, y a dedicar tiempo al Librito Negro cada día para renovarse espiritualmente.

Tres puntos más. Primero: la próxima semana es el Domingo de Ramos de la Pasión del Señor. Comenzaremos cada Misa al aire libre, tomando posesión de la Iglesia cantando gloria y alabanza a nuestro Dios. La Semana Santa que sigue es un tiempo de reflexión sobre los últimos días de Cuaresma, pero también sobre la luz que irrumpe en la oscuridad del mundo. Tengan en cuenta que la duración de cada Misa será más larga de lo habitual.

Segundo: la Pascua está a solo unas semanas. Es hora de comenzar, si aún no lo han hecho, a invitar a familiares y amigos, católicos alejados y vecinos a que vengan a celebrar con nosotros la gran alegría de la Pascua.

Por último, gracias a todos los que han contribuido a la Campaña Anual Diocesana. Como escuchamos la semana pasada, su donación no solo ayudará a nuestra Diócesis a realizar la labor crucial y apoyar a nuestra parroquia, sino que también nos ayudará a renovar el Salón Parroquial para convertirlo en un espacio más acogedor donde proclamar la alegría de Jesús.
